Dell made light work of our last corporate PCs group test with a feature-laden, high-performance PC supported by an excellent warranty. In this latter regard it's still leading the field, as there's a three-year, on-site warranty with next-business-day cover as standard, upgradeable to same day for £99. This time, the gigahertz processor doesn't seem so exceptional, but it still performed well thanks to a generous 256Mb of memory.

Dell is one of the few big manufacturers to include a dedicated graphics card in the AGP slot. The chosen Nvidia TNT2 M64-based card won't set the world alight in terms of 3D performance but is certainly better than integrated systems. Dell provides even less luxury when it comes to storage, only including a 20Gb hard disk and a 48-speed CD drive. The all-important network connectivity is taken care of by a 3Com chip integrated onto the motherboard, while a generic AC97-compatible codec looks after audio.

There are some nice touches to make life easier for users and technicians alike. The two USB ports mounted behind a door at the front allow easy connection of peripherals, while - from a technician's point of view - the case of the OptiPlex is simplicity itself. Once any padlock has been removed from the lug at the rear, the top of the case simply hinges forward, allowing access to all internal components. All the drives and PCI slots are secured with clips, ensuring swap-out time is kept to a minimum. Two full-height PCI slots are available as well as the half-height one sharing a backplate with the AGP slot.

To support the actual purchase process, Dell offers bespoke disk imaging and network pre-configuration for a price. On-site installation comes in three flavours: Basic, Classic and Comprehensive at £68, £97 and £161 per seat respectively. Dell's own OpenManage Client software is installed on the machine, allowing an IT administrator to remotely check on system events and hardware changes.

The sum of these parts is a well-balanced office system that, combined with its excellent warranty, is a wise choice for those wanting more than just a beige box with minimal support.
